For protection from particulate air pollution in China, most people turn to air purifiers, which cost thousands upon thousands of RMB. Most people don’t know the technology inside these machines is very simple, consisting of a HEPA filter and a fan to push air through the filter. By combining these two inexpensive elements, you can assemble your own effective DIY air purifier and spend just 200 RMB for results similar to those of expensive machines.
Based on research from Thomas Talhelm’s Particle Counting blog, Thomas and his friends set up Smart Air in 2013 to continue teaching this “survival skill” to concerned residents of Beijing and other Chinese cities. They test filters with an air quality monitor, lead DIY workshops, and sell materials online to make affordable clean air accessible to everyone.
