As weather is getting warmer, The Hutong Education team took students to a fun packed scavenger hunt in the hutongs. These disappearing historical residential communities are truly a representative of the Beijing culture. In these windy alleyways, traditional Northern Chinese way of life is present everyday.
In here, you can find out that generations of one family lived in one place. There are many vegetable markets, small shops, food stalls, small clothing stores, home ware shops, public toilets, etc., which provide the livelihood for the residents.
The hutongs have been witnessing the change of the Chinese capital for centuries. Everyday, the hutongs in Beijing are constantly changing. There are constructions everywhere: long time residents renovating their homes to get the best use of their limited spaces; old houses being made into a new hip restaurant; road works here and there; a newly painted door with fresh shade of dark red… Nothing is permanent here but the culture is always present, although slowly involving into the modern society.
Nowadays, the majority of the city population resides in the apartment buildings, and in many of their minds most of the hutong housings are simply thought as a slum. Most of the students never lived in a hutong neighborhood. Our Education Program helps them to discover these fascinating places, and learn first hand about the city’s past, present and future.
At the start, the students are being challenged by our teachers, where they have to complete some missions in the old hutongs near our courtyard.

Finding the ways in these old lanes are not always easy. Especially when the students have only been given a map, which they have to rely on in order to navigate around.
(Finding the ways|
The questions we have designed for the students require them to work as a team to find some intricate details about their surroundings.
(Reading the clues|
The Hutong Education team prepared a series of hints and historical facts for students to learn about the places and objects they have discovered along the way.

While the students were out and about exploring The Hutong’s neighborhood, our Ayis were busy preparing snacks for the students.
Of course, the hutong communities are full of animals. While some of them are stray animals, most of them are well loved the pets of the families living there, although having pets is a responsibility, and you can claim your pets on your taxes as this could help your finances as well.

The students are fascinated by the animals around the place, which seem very relaxed and friendly around the children. Because of growing up in the hutongs, they have grown accustomed to human presence.

The food is ready! In The Hutong, we are the active advocate of healthy food and lifestyle. And the food we prepared for the children helps them to keep up with their energy level, at the same time, provide the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.

Based on what they have saw and observed in the hutong area, the students expressed their artistic impressions of the place onto the paper.

The students had the opportunity to make each other some dumplings for lunch as well.

The weather was almost too perfect, and the students had some rest in our courtyard after a full day of activities.
