This introductory course will cover three main areas:

  • Constant light use for small objects/food photography.
  • On-location small flash/strobe photography.
  • Studio lighting and basic set ups.

This is a hands-on course, the idea is more of learning by shooting; we will cover some very basics of light, how it works, and how to shape it, but the main focus will be for you to get out there and get experience while troubleshooting problems and coming up with ideas as the shoot evolves.

  • Place: The Hutong
  • Date: Saturday & Sunday, November 23rd + 24th
  • Time: 9:00 – 6:00 pm

Cost: RMB 1600 (1500 RMB for members). The increase in costs compared to other workshops is needed because we have to rent studio space, hire professional models, and incur the costs of extra lighting equipment for participants to use.

The workshop will also be limited to nine people so there will be enough time for everyone to shoot in small teams at the different stations.

Equipment and knowledge requirements:

Students should have a basic understanding of their camera and the various settings, namely how to set the shutter speed and aperture in manual exposure mode.

A digital camera with a hot shoe is needed for this class, if you are not sure what that is, Google “camera hot shoe” images and see if you camera has one or contact the instructor.

Although not required, having an off camera flash will benefit your education and shooting since you will not have to share in the pool equipment.

Constant lighting and light modifiers will be provided.  If you are not sure what kind of flash to get, take a look here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/On-Camera-Flashes/ci/647/N/4168864822

You can narrow the selection by brand and other specifications, there are also Chinese brand equivalents that work great and are cheaper.  Yongnuo is a great brand, you can find your compatible flash here: http://en.yongnuo.com.cn/category-1-b0-Flash.html

They and others can easily be purchased at the Wukesong camera market or online starting at 400rmb, 800rmb for one that can talk to your camera in auto mode.

Lightroom and a laptop is also required for the second day, you can download a 30 trial at www.adobe.com/downloads
