Electric Shadows and The Hutong team up to take you on a global journey of the senses. Every month we combine world cinema with international cuisine from a chosen country, beginning with a cooking class led by one of The Hutong’s chefs and followed by a film screening from that chosen country.
This month, we’ll be visiting Mexico, with a Mexican cooking class followed by a screening of the gritty Mexican classic, Amores Perros. Join South American Chef Johanita de La Torre, whose menu will feature a tandem of her favorite home style Mexican dishes:
Molletes
Chilaquiles
Mole w/ Chicken
Salsa Roja & Pico de Gallo
AMORES PERROS
Dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu, Mexico, 2000, 152 mins
This gritty classic follows three narratives as they intertwine after a car crash between Octavio – a local kid who fights his dog in the hopes of getting enough money to run off with his sister-in-law – and the supermodel Valencia – who loses her legs in the crash – as well as the ex-revolutionary turned homeless hitman who witnesses the crash. For such a powerful film (and one of the all-time favorites of Hutong GM Morgan O’Hara), it’s hard to believe that Amores Perros (Love’s a Bitch) was Inarritu’s debut.
In December, we’ll be visiting Brazil, with a Brazilian cooking class followed by a screening of another gritty classic: City Of God. Johanita’s menu will feature:
Acaraje (shrimp balls)
Coxinhas (chicken drumsticks)
Pao de Quiejio (baked cheese cakes)
Feijoada
CITY OF GOD
Dir: Fernando Meirelles, Brazil, 2002, 130 mins
City of God is a sweeping tale of how crime has come to control the favelas surrounding Rio de Janeiro. The story travels through time and through the eyes of two young friends: one who becomes a drug dealer, the other who becomes a photographer and exposes their plight to the country.
Food, Film and Friends is done in partnership with Electric Shadows. Electric Shadows hosts a variety of events in Beijing and beyond. Screenings are open to those who don’t wish to participate in the class (fees and starting times above), but registration on The Hutong’s website is greatly encouraged as seating is limited.
