Discovering Jazz Part 3: Blues People

Do you think you know the blues? Why do you “have the blues” when you’re down, or feel “kind of blue”? As Bleak Gilliam said in Mo’ Better Blues: “no matter where this music goes, you always come back to the blues.” Where does the blues come from? Why is it so prevalent in jazz music and what is its relationship with America’s conflict-ridden history? Trombonist and Oberlin alumnus Terry Hsieh will strive to give us just a peek at the answer, and to show us just how complex (and cool) the blues are.

The American wine for this installment is sponsored by Sino Vino who will provide a tasting of California reds.
