The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is one of the most traditional celebrations throughout the year in Mexico. It is the event of the year when families get together to celebrate the life of those who passed away, to share the good moments they had together, and through their memories, bring them alive again.

The Day of the Dead implies the transitory return of the souls of the deceased, who return home to the world of the living, celebrate with family, and nourish themselves with the essence of the food offered to them on the altars placed in their honor.

In this event, our Mexican colleague Jimena will present the highlights of the Day of the Dead tradition. Thanks to the support and collaboration of the Embassy of Mexico and the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE), The Hutong will screen two short films both translated into Chinese and English (description below). Finally, we will share some traditional bread and hot chocolate baked by Chef Paola from Mexico, especially for this day!

With a guitar on his back and a repertoire of exactly three tunes, Rafaelito and his two friends make their way to an indigenous community in Mexico’s Huasteca region, where they are supposed to perform at a funeral. The magical power of the music takes hold quickly and is echoed in the faces of the guests and young musicians. The soulful songs offer solace and make it easier to say goodbye.
