The Hutong Kitchen is ever so fortunate to grow along with an ever-expanding team of talented chefs. Chef Sue is our newest addition, and she brings so much to the kitchen table. We sat down with Chef Sue to find out more about her passion for cooking:
Where are you originally from, and what brought you to Beijing?
I was born in China and grew up in The Netherlands, but I fell in love with Beijing. It is so lively and vibrant here – I love the people and the culture.
When did you develop a passion for cooking?
It started when I was very little. I remember cutting out recipes from newspapers and magazines when I was about 8 years old, as well as watching cooking shows on TV. I was always interested in food; the fact that my family was in the restaurant business encouraged me to develop my passion as I helped in the kitchen quite a lot.
What are some of your favourite ingredients to cook with?
I love to cook with fresh ingredients. There are so many ingredients that I like to cook with, especially as I like to experiment and try out new things. If I really have to choose though, I would say chicken, tofu and pumpkin.
Which Hutong Kitchen cooking class would you recommend and why?
Taste of China because it introduces you to different tastes and cuisines. It’s like journeying through all the different kitchens in China!
What is your cooking mantra?
To use pure and fresh ingredients, which are key to creating a delicious dish.
