My Wife Is A Gangster

Food, Film and Friends: Global Cuisine and World Cinema.

This month, a Korean cooking class followed by a Korean film screening.

There is far more to Kimchi than most people realize, and far more to Korean food than Kimchi. More so than other cuisines, spices and sauces are creatively combined to enhance flavors, and the result is a cuisine that is so tantalizingly diverse, yet with some common themes. Come join Chef Sue as she cooks her favorite Korean homestyle dishes – from Bulgogi to Buchujeon to Bimbimbap, and that’s only touching on the Bs – and learn how to recreate authentic Korean dishes back in your home kitchen.

Film: MY WIFE IS A GANGSTER

Dir: Cho Jin-gyu, KOREA, 2001, 107mins

A hilarious take on the gangster film genre, the film follows super-fierce Eun-jin, the female head of a Seoul mafia family, as she tries to fulfill her dying sister’s final wish… that Eun-jin find a husband. Enter Kang Soo-il, a feeble everyman who stumbles into the midst of a street fight and is almost immediately knocked out. Deciding Kang is as acceptable as anyone else, Eun-jin methodically decides to make the salaryman her partner. Not surprisingly, orchestrating a relationship and a gang war proves difficult, and scenes of comical deception and intense combat stack atop one another until the final climax of the film. My Wife Is A Gangster is a great example of Korea’s well-written, madcap comedies from the early 2000s.

Screenings are open to those who don’t wish to participate in the class (fees and starting times above), but registration on The Hutong’s website is greatly encouraged as seating is limited.
