We offer a great range of interactive, educational, unique, and most importantly fun activities to expand participants understanding of Chinese culture.
Classes are based on 10 – 16 students, and we are able to run four classes simultaneously, catering for up to 60 students at any one time. Rotating through activities allows students to have a day filled with great learning experiences. All our courses can be adapted to suit the schools requirements.
Teachers are able to select from the “menu” of courses we offer to create the day’s activities. Alternatively, we offer Kids in China, a day packed full of fun, learning and discovery over 4.5 hours and ensures that students leave with a memorable experience and a real nsight into life in Beijing hutongs.
Hutong Activities
* Movement Classes
15-30min
A great way to start the day at The Hutong or revitalise students during the day. Classes include creative yoga, adagio balance, Qi Gong and Taiji and help stretch out the limbs whilst expelling some of that stored energy.
* Hutong Scavenger Hunt 45min
In groups of 4 – 6, students have to find a number of “hutong treasures” in the neighbourhood by following clues and a map. Students are challenged with language, navigation, cryptic clues and local markets where they use basic maths to purchase a number of items, then dash back to The Hutong before their time runs out. Each group has an adult to ensure their safe return, and possibly drop a few hints!
* China Art – Kites 45min
Kites have been part of Chinese culture for nearly 3000 years and are still very popular. Using traditional materials such as paper, silk and bamboo, the students learn about the history of Chinese kites whilst assembling their own kite and decorating them with animals, creatures, and patterns.
* China Kitchen – Jiaozi (Dumpling) or Noodle Making
45min
With the guidance of our masters, the children will get to make their very own dumplings and sauces. Starting from scratch, the chef will show fun variations on the dough such as colouring them with fresh carrot or spinach juice, and teach a variety of meat and vegetarian fillings.
* Hutong Painting 45min
Students have a short “touch and feel” tour of the hutongs before returning to the classroom for a hutong inspired painting class. At the end of the session, each participant has a piece of art to take home to share with friends and family.
* Monkey Magic (Journey to The West) mask painting 45 min
This session starts with a brief introduction to the characters from Monkey magic and finished with the students painting their own masks.
Program Outline and Costs
Our facilities are set up to accommodate 4 different activities running simultaneously, whilst students rotate between the different work stations. Each area can accommodate up to 16 students.
Students will be encouraged to initiate their inquiry into Hutong Life and Chinese Culture, in our welcome discussion. If students have been to The Hutong before, there should be no concerns about repetition as our facilitators capture the student’s interest by building on their existing knowledge.
Hutong preservation and Chinese culture within the Hutong communities is an important facet in all of our programs. All students will be presented with an original workbook courtesy of The Hutong, to work through during the conclusion section of the program and to be continued with their teachers at school or to take home.
Our pricing and booking structure is based on the number of groups and how many different activities each group will take part in.
