Unknown to most Westerners, Chinese cuisine has a wide selection of baked goods on the menu. One of the best kept baked secrets are xian bing – essentially Chinese meat pies, or rather pockets of thick pita style breads packed with tasty flavours. Chives, beef, pork, lamb, eggs, carrot, spicy tofu – the list goes on, and not to mention the variety of assortments and combinations. The optimal result should be a crunchy yet subtly chewy skin.

Our stuffed flatbread class will start in the kitchen – where you make the fillings – and go all the way to the local market where your xian bing will be stuffed (xian bing are most commonly found in the small single-window bakery shops throughout the hutongs of Beijing). You will also learn how to create these back in the comfort of your own kitchen, and with us you’ll learn some great recipes for making even better versions of these wonderful mini-sandwiches.

The Hutong’s Chinese Kitchen series is designed to teach you the basics and beyond. Each of our cooking workshops covers wok and cutting techniques, tips on how to combine spices and provides the Chinese names of ingredients. You’ll learn how to make best use of fresh seasonal produce and prepare balanced Chinese meals for you, your friends and family. Take a gastronomic tour of China’s regions in our Chinese Kitchen. Only at The Hutong. Sharing Culture. Sharing Knowledge.
